Liverpool’s new signing Rio Ngumoha made an impressive debut for the club’s under-21s on Saturday morning, scoring a goal and providing an assist in a 3-2 win over Brighton.
The 19-year-old winger, who joined the Reds from Crystal Palace in the summer, showed why he is so highly rated with a lively performance.
Ngumoha gave Liverpool the lead in the 10th minute with a close-range finish, before setting up Bobby Clark for the second goal just before half-time.
Superb second half
The winger continued to be a threat in the second half, and he played a key role in Liverpool’s third goal, which was scored by Max Woltman.
Ngumoha was replaced by Melkamu Frauendorf with 15 minutes remaining, but he had already done enough to show that he is a player with a bright future.
Praise from Barry Lewtas
Liverpool under-21s coach Barry Lewtas was full of praise for Ngumoha after the game.
“I thought Rio was excellent,” Lewtas said.
“He showed great pace, skill and awareness, and he was a constant threat to Brighton’s defence.
“He’s still only 19, but he’s got a lot of potential, and I’m excited to see how he develops in the future.”
Fitting in well
Ngumoha has settled in well at Liverpool since joining the club in the summer, and he is determined to make the most of his opportunity.
“I’m really enjoying my time at Liverpool so far,” Ngumoha said.
“The coaches have been great, and the players have been very welcoming.
“I’m still learning and developing, but I’m confident that I can make a positive contribution to the team.”
Exciting future
Ngumoha is one of a number of exciting young players at Liverpool, and he will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott in breaking into the first team.
The winger has all the attributes to succeed at the highest level, and he is determined to make the most of his opportunity at Liverpool.
