A thunderstorm is classified as severe when it contains one or more of the following: * Hail with a diameter of 1 inch or larger * Wind gusts of 58 miles per hour or higher * Rainfall rates exceeding 2 inches per hourSevere thunderstorms can cause significant damage to property and infrastructure, and can even be life-threatening. They are often accompanied by lightning, heavy rainfall, and hail.
Warning System
When a thunderstorm becomes severe or is likely to become severe, a severe thunderstorm warning is issued. This warning is issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) or other authorized weather agency.
If you hear a severe thunderstorm warning, you should take shelter immediately. Stay indoors and avoid contact with windows and water. If you are outdoors, seek shelter in a sturdy building or vehicle.
